Opening Reception: Saturday January 22, 5 – 8pm, Admission free, all welcome.
The Exhibition will be formally opened at 6pm by Cord Meier-Klodt Cultural attaché at the German Embassy, London
Artists Annette and Erasmus Schröter are based in Leipzig, South Eastern Germany close to the town of Colditz, where the famous prison camp for allied officers was located during world war two. For its second exhibition Departure Lounge is delighted to welcome them to the UK to mount one of their bewitching shared exhibitions, Escape from Colditz.

One of the High Town Art For All artists FIona Mayes, has been working with glass. Make sure you come into the spaces to see what she has been creating. There is a community arts glass painting project and some examples of her own work.

FIona’s bio:

Following the completion of an Art Foundation course at Camberwell College of Art, Fiona graduated in Art Practice and the community in 1998. She has primarily worked with community groups to produce art pieces, focusing on work with children and young people. These have included a playground mosaic, masks, T-Shirt designs, collage and print making. After completing a short course at Central St Martin’s College of Art she has started making stained glass and this project is an opportunity to combine those two areas and make a piece of work incorporating glass painted by workshop participants into a larger piece.

Are you an artist? If so we want to here from you?

We are looking for some new fresh work to put into the High Town Art For All project. We would love to showcase your work and who knows you may even sell some of it? To take part you need to fill out an Artist Application Form.docx and agree to one of the two options:

o Option One
I would like to show my work in 37 or 40 High Town Road. I understand that to be part of the High Town Art For All project I need to commit to volunteer at the shop at least one day a week while my work is being shown. I understand that the group will be in touch with me to confirm these hours.
o Option Two
I would like to show my work in 37 or 40 High Town Road. I understand that to be part of the High Town Art For All project I am entitle to pay a fee of £10 a week while my work is being shown. I make this contribution as I am unable to commit to working in the shops.

ARTIST: Fiona Martin

One of the interactive works in High Town is an installation by Fiona Martin. The work encourages people to put up their favorite bands in relation to different music genres and relative to the rest of the music industry. Also Fiona is encouraging people to write their music stories on a wall and is slowly building a picture of what music means to people.

What Fiona says about her work:
For a number of years I have been producing paintings for private commission the majority of these have been for High Town residents by word of mouth. As a college student in 2002 I produced murals of rock and roll stars in Maggie’s Bar – a public house which used to be in High Town, this sparked off a series of private commissions for painted works. After graduating in Fine Arts from Oxford Brookes in 2007 I have developed the commissions further moving into album covers and vinyl.

Event: The Sea Scouts Appreciate Art

Organised by Liz Aldous, the Luton sea scouts will visit the gallery spaces, a chance for Cubs, Scouts and Beavers to visit the gallery and get involved in all the activities, meet whoever is available, Fiona Mayes has offered to do some glass painting, Fiona Martin will be there and Diana Hurley and Amanda Norman will be taking photos

Alziemers carers and sufferers will be visiting the galleries, listening to music, chat and relax and have a chance to the view the work, which will hopefully be stimulating. Noah Enterprises have donated some old records for us to listen to to encourage discussion and provide a relaxed atmosphere. Amanda Norman will be doing the photography for the event .

Wood Paintings of Rory Clark

A particular favourite of a number of visitors is the paintings by Rory Clark. Clark uses found bits of wood as a surface to make his work, this is what he says about his work:

Creativity was a bright flame suffocated in my youth by the folly of drink and drug abuse. Rescued in my mid twenties my life was rebuilt only to find myself in depression another decade later. With help I realised that long absent light wasn’t adolescent indulgence but an essential need.

Since beginning to explore creativity again in 2005 personal fears have been quashed and colour has invaded every aspect of my life. Doors have opened, relationships have bloomed and crucially a great sense of adventure has returned. In fact exploring creativity has been like being kidnapped by a mysterious friend. I don't know where I'm being taken and it's a bit unnerving. The mysterious friend is God and through creativity he's helped me understand things about Him and me that have healed wounds and changed the way I look at so many things. Without creativity I simply cannot engage fully with life, more importantly it teaches me about what it means to love and be loved.

My wife of 13 years is Hayley with whom I have 3 daughters aged 7, 4 and 1.

Event: Poetry Evening

On Thursday 14th October 5-8pm poetry evening organised by Liz Aldous for Noah enterprises, a chance for people of any age to come along and share or listen to poetry, some musicians will also be there to play some tunes and refreshments will be provided courtesy of Noah Enterprises .

Everyone welcome, an informal relaxed and hopefully fun evening for the community. The Noah art group designed all the posters in the art group with Liz today. Amanda Norman will be doing the photography for the evening.

The Opening was a great success, loads of people descended on the HIgh Town Art For All spaces. There was fun, live and recorded music, workshops, wine and plenty of opportunity to enjoy the artwork. We will post more photos and some video of the event soon!
